Californication: Mulder Gone Bad

I watched episodes 1 and 2 of Californication season 1. Man.

Lets just say like most geeks growing up when X-Files was hot, I prayed at the altar of Fox Mulder. I wanted to have his determination, his grit. I wanted his coolness.

Most of all, I wanted to be that close to beautiful Scully.

But thats not the point. There was some silly thinking involved here. Being the teenage geek, I felt Mulder experienced the same awkward interactions as me, and was misunderstood by everyone around him, including his drop dead gorgeous partner (are my views on Scully clear yet?). Somehow that got projected into hoping Duchovny's career would do well away from The X-Files. I went and saw Playing God, which was David Duchovny's first big role outside of X-Files. It was pretty terrible, and I ignored the other movies he made.

When Californication started on Showtime, I was tempted to watch, but I wanted to hang on to my hero fantasies of Duchovny/Mulder. While the sex addicted premise piqued my interest, it didn't interest me enough to care. Duchovny's recent trip to rehab and comparision to his Californication character though, got me interested.

After watching the first two episodes, I definitely plan on keeping up with the show. A few things stuck out. First, am I the only one who didn't find any of the women attractive at all? Sure there were plenty of fake breasts, but none of them were nice. Sure, different things attract different people, but come on! Second, Madeline Zima, who plays Mia Lewis, was Grace Sheffield on The Nanny. Seeing her have sex with Moody, totally gross! But her punching Moody during sex, hilarious!

My third point relates to Ricky Gervais. The British rendtion of The Office was funnier than the American version, but its interesting to see how many of Gervais's leading female characters from various shows have made it across the pond. Lucy Davis, who played Dawn Tinsley on the original The Office, shows up in Californication, and played a sizeable role in the now defunct Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Ashley Jensen, who was on Gervais's Extras has a pretty big recurring role on Ugly Betty.

Either way, I resisted the Californication bandwagon long enough. I'm on board.
